This vibrant studio class will start your children’s book illustration study in a dedicated small group setting. During this class, students will explore the wide range of children’s book illustration, from traditional to contemporary. Students will learn what makes a children’s book unique; how to communicate through illustration; and how to conceptualize and storyboard ideas. There will be demonstrations on a variety of materials that can be used to illustrate a book, such as wet media, acrylic, and pastel. Students will be encouraged to experiment with different media and begin to create their own children’s books, from the sketch phase to final illustrations. Creativity, concepting, expanding your compositions and staging, character development, storytelling, development of color media skills, and usage of color to create professional quality illustrations will be the focus of critiques. There will be many discussions on professional topics such as how to enter this competitive field and navigate the business practices of working as a children's book illustrator.

In class exercises as well as longer projects. Students will be expected with each assignment to develop their ideas, research and process. The assignments in this class are based on professional expectations in the field of children’s book illustration.

* Space is limited, as classes are kept small so more in-depth critique and study can be accomplished *
